In order that Wedding Tourism in Goa may flourish, the marriage registration laws in the state must change, said Francis Braganza, President, Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG). Goa’s uniform civil code, prevalent since the days of the Portuguese rule, mandates a fortnight’s ‘notice period’,
following which a civil registrar is authorised to solemnise the wedding, according to an IANS report. “Goa’s marriage laws prevent weddings from taking place quickly. Unless the laws are changed, Wedding Tourism will not grow,” Braganza said. L C Kavlekar, General Manager, Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), said, “Wedding Tourism is a new and upcoming segment. The potential is huge, and so is the challenge. Smaller groups of 70-100 people make the event more exclusive.”
