The Government of India is exploring the possibility of Lighthouse Tourism. “Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) is exploring the possibility of turning selected lighthouses in the country into tourist destinations for which the project is ready,” said G K Vasan, Minister for Shipping, Govt. of India after inaugurating the national Automatic Identification System (AIS) in Chennai on Aug 3, 2012.
In the first phase, 13 lighthouses, including four in Tamil Nadu, would be covered. Lighthouses in Chennai, Mamallapuram, Rameswaram and Muttam in Kanyakumari would be developed into tourist destinations. He said though the lighthouses are located at remote locations, the scenic looks in the environs are breathtaking. “Our beautiful lighthouse at Marina in Chennai is going to house a museum,” he added, according to a Deccan Chronicle report. Vasan also handed over the approval for setting-up a lighthouse at Vembar in Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu to DGLL. He further said the lighthouse directorate has been asked to provide state-of-art aids for navigation facilities along the Indian coastline and also in the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.
