Las Vegas Sands Corp, one of the largest integrated resort developers in the world, is interested in entering the Indian market. Addressing the media at The Venetian Macao recently, Sheldon G Adelson, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Las Vegas Sands Corp said, “If you are wondering whether I am interested in India as a potential destination for my property,
the answer is a definite yes. Unfortunately, I have not been invited by anyone who is interested.” Adelson has apparently expressed interest in India in the past as well. He revealed that he had approached an official in the Ministry of Tourism in Delhi about five years ago for permission to run an integrated resort with a casino in it and was told to approach each state separately to see who was interested and would give him permission for the property model. However, he never heard back from any of the officials he approached thereafter. “The integrated resort I created has changed the face of tourism in Las Vegas, Singapore and Macau with The Venetian Las Vegas, Marina Bay Sands Singapore and The Venetian Macao, respectively. I want to recreate a Las Vegas in India. It is a no-brainer that this model increases tourism. Singapore has 12 million tourists ad a small local population. India has a population of over one billion with only six million tourists. It can handle much more. If casinos are the issue, let me assure you, the casinos are only two per cent of the property and are necessary to provide subsidy to hold it all together. There will be so much more that will help India's inbound tourism boom in no time,” said Adelson. Las Vegas Sands Corp is also set to recreate the magic of the integrated resort model in Spain with the opening of the Europa Vegas. Adelson stated that following a few more concessions and regulatory and zoning by-laws, work on the Europa Vegas will begin. There is, however, no clarity yet on how long it might take. In addition, he revealed that the group is lobbying in Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan as well to build similar properties. The group is set to open the booking for its Sands Cotai Central property in Macau on January 31, 2012. The property itself will open doors to guests by spring 2012. It will feature the integrated resort model that is the signature of the group, and will offer the comforts of Conrad, Sheraton and Holiday Inn to its guests.
