NEWS | WTTC’s Founding Member Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge dies at 78

Travel and tourism industry veteran Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge previously known as Colin Marshall passed away last week at the age of 78. A memorial service will be held later in the year. He was a Founding Member of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). David Scowsill, President & CEO, WTTC, said,
“Lord Marshall was a travel & tourism industry titan. His vision helped to create WTTC in 1990 and in a career spanning 60 years he was a tireless advocate for the economic and social contribution of our industry. He will be sadly missed by his colleagues at WTTC. Tributes and condolences are coming in from friends and business colleagues around the world.” Talking about Marshall’s contribution to WTTC, James D Robinson III, fellow WTTC Founding Member, said, “Colin was instrumental in the initial formation of WTTC and played a key role throughout his association. He was a unique voice and a dedicated believer in the power of the industry's message of economic development and job creation around the world.” Marshall began his career in 1951 with the Orient Steam Navigation Company. He spent 23 years in vehicle and rental leasing industry, initially working with Hertz and subsequently with Avis. In 1983, he was appointed as the CEO of British Airways and for 21 years he played a fundamental role in the privatisation of the airline and its subsequent business transformation. Marshall was appointed as the Chairman of British Airways in 1993, a position he held till he retired from the airline in 2004. From 2005 to 2006, Marshall was the Chairman of VisitBritain, the national tourism board of Britain. He was the President of the Confederation of British Industry and chaired the CBI International Advisory Board from May 1996 to July 1998. He also held senior non-executive positions at Invensys plc, Inchcape plc, HSBC Holdings plc, Pirelli UK plc and Nomura International plc, among others.
