The government of Kerala will impose a six per cent price hike on all Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), except beer, from August 1, 2012, said an Excise Department official. The price hike, which is the second one since 2009, will amount to Rs 10-15 net rise in price.
"We expect that this fiscal, the sales of liquor will cross Rs 8,000 crore,
and the state exchequer will get more than Rs 7,000 crore. This new six per cent hike would give the distillers an additional Rs 43 crore, and the state government an extra Rs 230 crore," the official was quoted as saying. In the previous financial year, sales of liquor had crossed a record Rs 7,000 crore, while the revenue to the state government by way of taxes crossed Rs 6,000 crore, according to an IANS report. However, the Kerala Bottlers and Distillers Federation, and the Association of Distillers, Brewers and Vintners of India had sought a ten per cent price hike.
