NEWS | IATA asks Indian government to buck up on Air India issue

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has asked the Government of India to adopt some strong measures towards stabilisaiton of Air India, which is ailing under a financial crisis, according to a report by bernama.com. Clear accountability and timelines for management, employees, including pilots, have to be set, and transparent disclosure is needed to measure progress, Tony Tyler, Director General and CEO, IATA,
was stated as saying. Drawing similarities between the situation of Air India and that of Japan Airlines (JAL), which had filed for bankruptcy in January, 2010, Tyler said, “The cuts were deep with some 50 routes and 16,000 jobs. With this bitter medicine and other measures, JAL emerged from bankruptcy. After reporting USD 2.5 billion profit in 2011, it plans to relist its share this autumn." The Japanese government had led a restructuring effort with an investment of over USD three billion.
