NEWS | Mauritius Tourism targets 100,000 Indian arrivals by 2015

With Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) recording 53,000 Indian arrivals to Mauritius in 2011, the tourism board is targeting 100,000 Indian arrivals to Mauritius by 2015. In addition, MTPA has increased its marketing and promotion budget for the Indian market to 34 million Mauritius Rupees from 15 million Mauritius Rupees the previous year. MTPA also aims to expand the diverse product offering of the destination through a gamut of integrated destination marketing initiatives. Vijaye Haulder, Deputy Director, MTPA said,
“Mauritius has received a significant increase in the average spend per person by Indian travellers, contributing heavily to the tourism receipts of the destination. The spending power of an Indian traveller to the destination has doubled to USD 360 per person per day indicating a positive consumption trend. With the increasing consumer base of high spending Indian tourists seeking unique activity-based indulgences; we are committed to a greater destination visibility by enhancing the awareness quotient of the destination and positioning Mauritius as a must-visit destination.” Talking about the target segments in the Indian market, Haulder said, “MTPA is making efforts to target the niche and experiential segments in India such as self drive holidays, Eco Tourism, spa and wellness, golf clientele. We are looking at travellers seeking activities such as sky diving, quad bike, segway, wind surfing, water skiing, sub-scooter, submarine, walk with the lions etc. Besides family, honeymoon, MICE segments, we are also tapping the Indian film industry and wedding segment.” To tap these segments, MTPA is looking at focus on the metros and Tier II cities in the country like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur and Nagpur.
