NEWS | Air India reduces business class seats to boost business

In a bid to generate more revenue in the price-sensitive Indian domestic market, state-owned carrier Air India will now reduce the number of business class seats, in a large number of their Airbus aircraft that fly on domestic routes, from 20 to 12 per flight. Correspondingly, the economy-class seats will be increased in these aircraft by 18 seats (three rows).
This was approved by the Air India board at its meeting that ended late on February 27, 2012, according to an Asian Age report. The airline may also lease out vacant floors at its buildings located at prime locations in Mumbai and New Delhi. These are the Air India head office at Nariman Point in Mumbai and the Airlines House near Parliament Street in New Delhi. The mounting debts carried by the national carrier due to inefficient operations has pushed the the company to the edge.
