The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking to promote Film and Wine tourism in India. In a recent bid to promote business and tourism to Virginia as well as its wines, Robert F McDonnell, Governor, Commonwealth of Virginia and First Lady, Maureen McDonnell, hosted a reception in Mumbai. Mumbai is the first stop in a three-city tour of India which includes Delhi and Bangalore.
In her address, the First Lady talked about wine, tourism and filming in Virginia and how its many attractions have a lot to offer to the Indian visitor. Promoting filming in the State of Virginia is part of the objectives of the India mission. Meetings have been organised with leading Indian film directors and producers. Films such as ‘Dave’, ‘John Adams’, ‘Evan Almighty’, ‘War of the World’s’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’ are among many which have been filmed in Virginia. Steven Spielberg is currently filming, ‘Lincoln’ in Richmond, Virginia. The First Lady extended a personal invitation to all present to experience Virginia. She said, “It is a great pleasure to be with you here in Mumbai. We want to see more businesses from your country to expand in Virginia and we wanted to be here personally to invite the people of India to visit our beautiful state.” The event was attended by representatives from the travel, wine, film and corporate sectors. The evening saw the Governor raising a symbolic toast in a special, ‘Jefferson’ cup to strong ties and friendship between India and the state of Virginia. The cup is inspired by Thomas Jefferson, who served as President of the United States of America and was well known for his passion for promoting wines. Grapes brought from Europe were planted at his estate of Monticello.
