Punjab to become top tourist destination in coming years: Sukhbir S Badal

The ongoing infrastructure development projects in Punjab such as construction of roads, airports and convention facilities would put the state one of the top ranking tourist destinations in the country, stated Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Punjab. He was inaugurating the three-day convention of Hotel & Restaurant Association of Northern India (HRANI) in Amritsar last week.

Enumerating the infrastructure projects underway in the state, Badal said, “All the important cities of the state will be soon connected by four and six-lane roads and will facilitate good connectivity to all tourist destinations. Apart from air-conditioned coaches and radio taxis, the government is also planning to launch radio three-wheeler services in important cities of the state.” He added that with three international airports, and domestic connectivity from Sahnewal, Pathankot and Bathinda, Punjab will be the state with the best air connectivity in the country. He said that the first international flight from SAS Nagar to Abu Dhabi will start from the last week of October this year.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the state is also setting up huge convention centres in the state to promote the state as a convention destination in India. These convention centres are being set up at Amritsar, Ludhiana, and SAS Nagar which offer good connectivity to overseas destinations, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Member of Parliament, Amritsar said that about 1.25 lakh people visit Amritsar daily but they return the same day. He said that the tourism industry in the city could benefit if these visitors stay on for a night in the city.
