NEWS | MTDC to turn Mithbav beach into tourist spot

The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) will convert Mithbav beach in Sindhudurg into a tourist spot. MTDC plans to build a resort worth Rs 22 crore, construct dams and roads, and make arrangements for security and water supply at the beach. Jagdish Patil, Managing Director, MTDC,
said, "Private players have not explored Mithbav yet. Once MTDC develops the place, private players will trickle in and further develop the infrastructure here, like in the case of Tarkarli. The construction of a dam here seems to be ideal too, as the place receives plenty of rainfall. A dam will help store water, thus recharging drinking water sources, apart from adding to the place's beauty." Further development at the beach will be undertaken through public-private partnership, based on a revenue-sharing model, according to an MTDC official. MTDC has already floated tenders to invite bids for the development of infrastructure, according to a report by The Times of India. MTDC has also made a tentative plan to set-up a mango orchard resort, an international convention centre, a business centre and a golf course at the beach. "This is a new concept we are trying to explore. Devgad mangoes are a speciality of this place, hence the concept of a mango orchard resort. Similarly, there are resorts set amidst coconut orchards too. This is an aspect of Eco Tourism,” said the official. Additionally, MTDC has proposed the setting-up of eco-friendly cottage-like structures at Mithbav beach and Ubhadanda beach, which is also in Sindhudurg, as well as at Harihareshwar in the Raigad district. The Rs six crore project adheres to the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, which do not allow concrete
 constructions along coastal areas.
