NEWS | Indian air space saw 2 near-miss incidents every month from Jun 2011-Aug 2012: DGCA

An average of two near-miss incidents were reported every month from India’s air space in the period spanning June 2011 to April 2012, according to data compiled by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). There have been at least 22 occasions in June 2011, wherein lives of passengers were at risk due to such incidents. Of the 22 incidents, 11 cases were reported from the Chennai flight information region alone, followed by five incidents from Delhi and four from Mumbai. On five
occasions, one or both aircraft involved were those of IndiGo and SpiceJet, while on six occasions, the near-miss incidents involved international airlines. An Indian Air Force aircraft was involved in two of the 22 incidents. A near-miss incident could result from factors like lack of co-ordination between the air traffic controller and the pilot, with one or both working under extreme stress, and the burgeoning number of flights operating at major airports, caused by induction of numerous low-cost airlines, the DGCA said.
