Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) is supporting the Ministry of Tourism’s (MoT) target to increase Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) by 2016 by 11.37 million, Domestic Tourist Visitors (DTVs) by 1496 million with additional requirement of 23.4 lakh rooms and Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) of Rs 13,4665 crore.
Kamlesh Barot, President, FHRAI, said, "There are many impending issues hurting the growth of the Indian hospitality industry. The issues including, high taxes on tourism and moral policing due to archaic laws are primary issues among many. Moreover, high interest rates, inflation, lack of provisions for hospitality under infrastructure
policies, sanitation, Airport & Tourist services, licensing, lack of trained manpower, exporter status, visa issues and the laws pertaining to the land acquisition for projects are also the areas of concern." The industry’s contribution in India’s GDP was 5.92 per cent (in 2011) which is expected to be at 7.3 per cent in 2012. The industry also contributes 9.24 per cent employment in the country with 53 million people employed. FHRAI estimates that the government shall increase the industry’s contribution to GDP at 7.8 per cent by 2022. Moreover, the enhanced GDP shall be creating approximately 37 million direct and indirect new jobs. The MoT’s vision for 2016 states that, 11.37 million FTAs shall take place, along with 1496 million DTVs, which the FHRAI shall support. Vivek Nair, Honorary Secretary (FHRAI), said, “The hospitality industry has a huge manpower requirement and there will be a scope for additional employment generation in this industry.”
