Mauritius Tourism is focusing on emerging markets and has identified India as a primary source market. A comprehensive long term strategy is being planned to tap the Indian market and increase Indian visitor arrivals. The focus will be to tap MICE and Wedding segments and to encash on the trend of weekend breaks to increase FIT traffic from India. “We are working on an incentive scheme for the Indian travel trade to promote and sell Mauritius as a MICE destination.
We will also be launching weekend packages in collaboration with Air Mauritius by September 2012. Talks are also on with Air Mauritius to increase frequency to five flights a week from Mumbai by operating the additional flight on Thursday to tap the weekend holiday segment,” stated Michael Yeung Sik Yuen, Minister for Tourism & Leisure, Govt. of Mauritius. The Minister on his maiden visit to India recently, interacted with industry stakeholders in Mumbai and Delhi.
According to Yuen, they want to position Mauritius as a high-end luxury and experiential destination. He informed that they are also promoting Mauritius as a Golf and Wellness Tourism destination. “India is the sixth biggest market for Mauritius and the country recorded 53,955 Indian arrivals last year. The target this year is 60,000 and 100,000 Indian arrivals in near future,” stated Yuen. The Minister was accompanied by Premila Roy, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Dr. Karl Mootoosamy, Director, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority. Mootoosamy informed that they plan to conduct road shows in three Indian cities in September 2012 and also work in collaboration with the Indian travel trade for joint promotion.
Talking about the plans for travel trade Dr Mootoosamy said, “Travel trade is important to increase tourism to Mauritius.
