India's Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India to participate in its Incredible India campaign. According to GJEPC, the mutually beneficial association aims to provide India's jewellery trade with the opportunity to target untapped markets and increase the amount of jewellery being exported, while the tourism industry hopes to expand its promotion of Indian heritage to the international tourists coming into the country, according to a report by Diamond Intelligence Brief.
"The ministry of tourism encompasses a range of countries that may hitherto not have been approached by the gem and jewellery industry, making it an opportune association which will go a long way in expanding the reach of markets that the gem and jewellery industry reaches out to," stated Rajiv Jain, Chairman, GJEPC. Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister for Tourism added, "Jewellery symbolises our rich heritage, and our association [with the GJEPC] is an attempt to urge foreign nationals to take back a piece of this rich heritage in the form of jewellery." The agreement was signed at a recent event for over 200 ambassadors and diplomats in Delhi, during which Indian retailers showcased their range of jewellery to facilitate strengthening of bi-lateral trade between the participating countries. The guest list included over 200 ambassadors of China, Switzerland, Austria and leading diplomats from Zimbabwe, Japan, Iraq, UK, USA, Brazil, Botswana and Chile, among other national and international dignitaries.
