On a day when the Beijing Olympic torch relay passed off peacefully without any attempted disruptions like those witnessed in London or Paris, China gave Jet Airways the much-awaited operating permit to fly to Shanghai and beyond, to San Francisco.
This perhaps makes India the only foreign country to have rights for taking passengers from China and fly them to a third country, said aviation ministry sources.
Jet got the operating permit on Thursday which gives them the fifth freedom rights to fly the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco flight. India and China have agreement for operating 49 flights weekly on each side but the delay in Jet's case happened as it wanted to fly not just to China but also take traffic from there to US," said a senior official.
But the long wait for this permission has meant that the new flight is likely to begin only by mid-June.
